Nuclear Energy in a Global Context: Opportunities and Challenges

We are delighted to announce the upcoming event organised by the ESCP Europe Energy Society.

Speaker

Invited speaker David Kovatch, Director of the US Department of Energy (DOE) office at the Embassy of the United States in the United Kingdom discussed the current state of nuclear energy, looking at the challenges presented and the opportunities available therein. He also shared key insights on the role played by the U.S. Government and its Department of Energy, and various other geopolitical implications.

The event took place at ESCP Europe's London Campus at 5:30 pm on 23rd November, 2015. The talk was followed by a drinks reception.

David Kovatch

David Kovatch is the Director of the US Department of Energy (DOE) office at the Embassy of the United States in the United Kingdom. In this role he advances U.S. energy policy interests in the United Kingdom in the fields of energy security, energy efficiency and renewable energy, nuclear power, nuclear safety, nuclear security, nonproliferation, counter-terrorism, climate change, and environmental management.

David has served the DOE since 2010. From 2010-2012 he supported the DOE National Nuclear Security Administration’s (NNSA) Office of Global Material Security where he implemented radiological and nuclear security projects in Central Asia, the Caucasus, and Afghanistan. From 2012-2014 David served in the Office of the NNSA Deputy Administrator for Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation. In this role he supported the negotiation of a successor agreement to the 1992 Nunn-Lugar Cooperative Threat Reduction Agreement, chaired the 2012 Nuclear Security Working Group in the U.S. – Kazakhstan Energy Partnership Dialogue, and supported the U.S. delegation to the IAEA General Conference.

In 2014 David transitioned to the DOE Office of International Affairs as a Senior Energy Advisor where he supported bilateral and multilateral energy initiatives in the Americas. 

Prior to joining the Department of Energy, David worked as a teacher in Brazil and Sweden and as an Americorps volunteer in Charleston, South Carolina. David holds a Bachelor’s degree in Latin American Studies from the University of Illinois at Chicago and a Master’s degree in International Affairs from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs.
