Corporate Risk Management in the Energy Industry: A Strategic and Functional View

Risk taking is inherent to entrepreneurship provided, however, the risk-reward trade off is acceptable.

Starting from that point, the task of the Risk Management team is to provide clear and relevant information about risk exposure of the company to all stakeholders, to promote risk awareness within the organisation and, considering the risk appetite of the organisation, to propose appropriate actions to mitigate risks and to seize opportunities.

Indeed, in a turbulent corporate environment efficient risk management is definitely a source of competitive advantage.

Gas and Oil: The Future of Africa

Gas and oil play a key role in Africa. In North Africa, four countries out of the seven are gas and oil producers, three of which are large consumers/exporters.

In Sub-Saharan Africa, oil is by far the most important source of commercial energy. While some countries (e.g. Nigeria and Angola) are large producers/exporters, many others require imported oil; as such, their energy bill is a large percentage of their GDP.

Developing gas and oil production, improving the management of oil revenues, developing the logistics for gas and oil imports and exports, and methods of saving gas and oil everywhere possible are all key issues in Africa.

Computational Intelligence Methods in Financial Decision Making

Financial decisions are characterised by their highly complex and ill-structured nature, the increasing volume of data that needs to be analysed, and the uncertainties involved in the decision context.

Computational intelligent systems and techniques are well-suited in this framework. Computational intelligence methodologies have been successfully used in a variety of complex financial decision-making problems, providing researchers and practitioners with the ability to process massive financial data, enabling the solution of complex financial optimisation problems, and facilitating the decision-modelling process through methodologies that cope with the non-linearities, uncertainties and ambiguity involved in the decision making process.

Leadership Transformation

Research has continuously proven that a great deal of personal, team and organisational potential is lost due to a lack of personal and interpersonal awareness and skills. For example:

  • 70% of the top reasons for losing customers relate to a lack of social and emotional intelligence (The Forum Corporation on Manufacturing and Service Companies, 2004)
  • 50% of time wasted in business is due to lack of trust (John O.Whitney, Director, Center for Quality Management, 2002)
  • Top reasons why careers are derailed are related to a lack of social and emotional intelligence (Center for Creative Leadership, 2005; Stanford University, 2001)
  • "80-90% of the competencies that differentiate top performance are in the domain of emotional intelligence." (Daniel Goleman, 1998).
  • "Emotional intelligence is more than twice as predictive of business performance than purely cognitive intelligence." (Gerald Mount, 2006)
  • "Leaders with higher social and emotional intelligence produce more powerful business results and greater profitability." (Steven Stein, 2009)

Interesting Business Philosophies: Market-Based Management ®*

The main lesson from twentieth century economic history is that central planning fails, however many corporations continue to choose hierarchies over markets. “Market-Based Management” ® is a management philosophy that applies the principles of free societies to organisations. Not only does it offer a toolkit of strategies that can be implemented to improve corporate performance, but it also provides a coherent framework to interpret the increasingly popular movement towards flatter organisations, decentralised decision-making, and internal markets.
